WHAT IS THE NEWENT ONION FAYRE?

The Onion Show
The Onion Show which is staged in the Memorial Hall, is the only one of its kind in the country, in that the exhibits are purely varieties from the Onion Family, or Alliums to give them their correct name. As well as onions, exhibits are invited for blanch leeks, pot leeks, garlic and chives.
Exhibitors from as far afield as the north of England and from Wales have been bringing their exhibits for the last 14 years. There are excellent cash prizes to be won, as well as trophies for the winners of the various classes.
There are also classes for children up to 11 years of age, to show off their artistic talents and make an animal out of vegetables - especially onions, of course - and this year, by special request, we have included a class for teenagers and adults to show off their prowess in this art. We look forward to seeing some ‘older’ entries this year.
We are privileged to have as our Judge for 2010, an old friend of the Onion Show, Medwyn Williams, MBE, AHRHS, FNVS. Medwyn was instrumental in upgrading the schedule to its present form and thus transforming the event to what it has become.
Winner of 10 Gold Medals at the Chelsea Flower Show (1996-2005), Gold Medalist at Hampton Court and Cincinnati, USA, The Lawrence Medal 2001 and 2004 and winner at the Royal Welsh Show, Tatton Park, Malvern and Harrogate, Medwyn is the National Chairman of the National Vegetable Society, to which the Onion Show is affiliated.
We are pleased to welcome him back to Newent and hope that his wife, Gwenda, will be able to join him on this occasion.
If you would like a schedule for this year’s event, please telephone Mike or June Davies on 01531 822750 or email june.davies03@btinternet.com.
The Hall opens to the public as soon after 10.30am as possible on the day, when judging is complete. Onion Show Trophies, which are held by winners for one year, will be presented at 4.30pm on the day.
